ComicCon Is Insane

It’s hard to explain the the phenomenon that is Comic Con. It’s a big nerd fest with comics and movies and tv shows, but it’s hard to just marginalize it as just a fringe event. It’s not just fat greasy creeps taking pictures of short skirt Japanese anime girls. There’s big money here. The tv show Grimm shrink wrapped an entire building in promotional shit. NBC paid for an entire block to advertise however they please, yet they have very few genre shows.
The expected cosplay people are not as plentiful as expected. Most I’ve seen we’re employed by the convention or weird schizo hybrid “I’m a designer with original ideas” types. Here’s a wolverine /Boba Fett mash up…

Cute right? Here’s a badass robot from Lost In Space! Oh dear, my fanboy is hanging out…

A lot of this convention is exactly like every other trade show you’ve ever seen. Besides the panels pimping new tv shows and movies, there are industry specific panels. I’m currently sitting in on the Comixology presentation, about all the tool sets for storytelling and distribution. The next one I’ll be sitting in on is about digital coloring. Exciting stuff here folks.

Don’t get me wrong, this room is still filled with overweight ungroomed slobs that are putting out fumes like a Union Carbide disaster. I need to get out and breath.
